AIGecko Technologies is born, artificial intelligence at the service of image recognition
Deep learning is a field of artificial intelligence that in recent years has revolutionized the market and our daily lives in aspects such as automatic driving, artificial vision or virtual assistants, among many other applications. “Deep learning technology allows a computer to learn to automatically distinguish features based on images, having been shown thousands or millions of images before,” explains Petia Radeva, professor at the Department of Mathematics and Informatics at the University of Barcelona (UB) and co-founder of AIGecko Technologies, the new spin-off of the UB. The founding team is completed by Eric Verdaguer, as CEO, and Marc Bolaños, as CTO.
AIGecko offers image recognition and analysis services based on algorithms developed by members of the consolidated Computer Vision and Machine Learning research group, which have led to different products.
The LogMeal API cloud solution uses a powerful algorithm to recognize different types of cooked food through a single image of the plate. In addition to detecting, analyzing, recognizing, identifying, categorizing and being able to differentiate different types of food in the same image, LogMeal API is able to extract in detail all the ingredients and nutritional information (micronutrients and macronutrients) of each dish, which that makes it a unique solution for the control and monitoring of the diet of a user or patient. This algorithm, 100% integrable in any digital development, has already been implemented in health and nutrition fields, and it is expected that it will also do so in the mass consumer sector.
In this context, the UB spin-off has also developed LogMeal Kiosk, a digital food recognition kiosk that, by scanning the diner’s tray, detects and identifies all the dishes and products it contains (disregarding what is not food or drink), calculates its price and facilitates payment by credit card and mobile terminals, as well as giving the diner a detailed summary of their food. The technology, aimed at all types of restaurants, such as self-service restaurants, caterings, company canteens and schools, high-performance centers, etc., manages to generate an innovative payment automation experience that reduces waiting and controls product stock in real time. All this in a 100% contactless way.
AIGecko Technologies has also developed the LogMask API, a technology solution in the cloud that allows detecting people with and without a mask and personal protective equipment such as helmets or vests. This facilitates the management of security regarding the use of these mandatory accessories in different spaces such as hospitals, shops, airports, transport, mines, public works, etc. The technology can be integrated in the current CCTV or IP cameras of companies or establishments and reaches an efficiency of 99%. It works in different lighting conditions, both in open spaces and in closed spaces, regardless of the number of people there are. The technology also makes it possible to control the capacity in closed spaces, an important feature in exceptional situations such as the covid-19 pandemic. This technology was implemented during the second quarter of 2020 in Espai Abacus de Barcelona, an establishment of more than 1,600 square meters of Abacus Cooperativa, where it has offered highly positive results, generating confidence and tranquility to customers who access the establishment.
