Seminar – Dr. Elizabeth Powell – “Quantifying blood-brain barrier permeability using MRI “

24/04/2026 ⎯ 11:00 am

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) tightly regulates the exchange of nutrients, molecules and waste products between the blood and brain tissues. Disruption to these exchange processes is implicated across neurological disorders and often precedes clinical symptoms, so microvascular exchange biomarkers offer a powerful early diagnostic opportunity. In this talk, I will present an overview of our research on quantifying subtle BBB permeability using novel non-invasive diffusion MRI methods, including the generation of microvascular digital twins designed to help interpret MRI signals, Bayesian modelling techniques, and pre-clinical and clinical imaging studies in neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Elizabeth Powell is a senior research fellow at UCL. Her research focus is advanced MRI methods for quantifying blood-brain barrier permeability, with applications across neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis, dementia, and gliomas. She is particularly interested in sequence development, signal modelling, and computational microvascular phantoms.
