The Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona is thrilled to announce the successful completion of its Leadership Program for Junior Women in Science. Conducted between April and May 2024, this pioneering initiative was designed to empower women scientists and address the boost the rate of female talent in the scientific field, mostly in later career stages.
The program, structured over two months, featured a series of four intensive workshops complemented by an ongoing peer coaching routine. The workshops were held bi-weekly on Thursdays, creating a momentum of learning and development. Each session was four hours long and covered various aspects of leadership critical for personal and professional growth.
The first workshop, “Leading Yourself,” introduced the global framework of the program and fostered a positive and cohesive group dynamic. Participants delved into the realms of emotional intelligence, gaining insights into self-awareness, self-management, and the impact of emotions on professional relationships.
In the second workshop, “Leading Others,” the focus shifted to developing effective communication and leadership skills. Participants explored different communication styles, the fundamentals of leadership, and essential people management techniques, including active listening, assertiveness, and the art of giving and receiving feedback.
The third workshop, “Leading Your Career,” was centered around empowering participants to take charge of their professional trajectories. This session emphasized the development of negotiation skills and the use of visualization tools to map out and achieve career goals. It was a transformative experience that equipped participants with practical strategies for career advancement.
The final workshop prepared participants for the peer coaching routine. This session introduced basic coaching skills and facilitated the creation of peer coaching teams. These teams are now engaged in a continuous cycle of learning, sharing experiences, and supporting each other in an autonomous and confidential manner.
Facilitated by Alicia Marín Muniesa, a seasoned coach with extensive experience in leadership training, the workshops challenged participants to actively engage and apply their learnings. Participants have reported significant boosts in confidence and leadership capabilities. They have highlighted the practical tools and supportive network gained through the program, which has empowered them to pursue their scientific careers with renewed vigor and direction.
