UBneuro at the Recognition Ceremony for Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Excellence Accreditations 2018-2023

The Institute of Neurosciences (UBneuro) has once again been recognized for its exceptional scientific contributions, renewing its Maria de Maeztu unit of excellence accreditation for the 2022-2026 period.

This prestigious distinction, awarded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), has been presented at an official ceremony on September 6th presided over by the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, Diana Morant. The accreditation highlights the institute’s continued leadership in advancing neuroscience research and its ability to address major societal challenges through cutting-edge science.

During the event, Minister Morant praised the transformative role of institutions like UBneuro, emphasizing their ability to drive innovation and contribute to the well-being of society. The renewal of UBneuro’s Maria de Maeztu accreditation for a second consecutive term underscores the institute’s sustained excellence in scientific performance, international competitiveness, and its capacity to attract top-tier national and international talent.

Domènec Espriu, director of the AEI, stressed that while the number of centers and units awarded has grown, the selection process remains highly competitive, with many strong candidates. The fact that UBneuro has consistently maintained its position among these elite institutions speaks to the quality and impact of its research.

As part of the recognition, each Maria de Maextu Unit receives an annual funding of 500,000 euros for the next four years, enabling further advancements in its strategic research agenda. UBneuro is recognized alongside other distinguished units at the University of Barcelona, including the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB), the Barcelona Institute of Analytic Philosophy (BIAP), the Nutrition and Food Safety Research Institute (INSA), and the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (IQTC), all acknowledged for their scientific excellence with the Maria de Maeztu distinction.
