The project, led by Professor David Gallardo, aims to scientifically validate the benefits of the marine environment on human health and is part of a larger European funding initiative for the Pyrenean region.

The Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona (UBneuro) is proud to announce the launch of SEAHEALS, a pioneering project focused on the concept of “Blue Health”: the integration of health and well-being with the marine environment.

Led by Professor David Gallardo, director of the Individual Differences Lab (IDLab) and member of UBneuro, alongside Professor Jordi Renom (Department of Social Psychology of the UB), this initiative aims to create a trans-Pyrenean network dedicated to health and the sea.

SEAHEALS will study and scientifically validate the psychological and physiological benefits of marine activities. The project involves a collaboration with the Health and Social Union for Support and Prevention (USSAP) and the SomMar organization. By applying innovative strategies, the team aims to benefit both the general public and individuals with specific physical and mental health conditions, disseminating their findings through a new digital platform.

Beyond the health implications, SEAHEALS is designed to strengthen the connection between science, public health, and sustainability in coastal areas. It aims to add value to sustainable tourism linked to well-being and promote the conservation of the marine environment as a vital source of health.

SEAHEALS is one of four major University of Barcelona projects recently funded by the POCTEFA 2021-2027 programme, a cross-border cooperation initiative between Spain, France, and Andorra. Read more information about all four UB projects here.
