Non-Invasive Human Brain Stimulation Laboratory

This laboratory provides advanced capabilities for non-invasive electrical and magnetic brain stimulation, operated robotically and guided by neuronavigation. It is combined with high-density electroencephalography (EEG) and peripheral electrophysiology, including electrocardiography, electromyography, skin conductance, respiration, and accelerometry.

This laboratory includes a main recording room and an adjacent control room. The main room offers a spacious area, providing flexibility for implementing various experimental paradigms. The adjacent control room allows for remote operation of the equipment, eliminating the need for experimenters to be physically present in the main room during experiments.

By leveraging these technologies, the laboratory enables the induction of transient or lasting changes in brain function non-invasively, utilizing brain plasticity and capturing these effects in real time. Neuronavigation allows for precise and personalized targeting of brain regions defined functionally or anatomically, while robot-assisted stimulation ensures an unprecedented level of accuracy and repeatability both within and between subjects.

Typical applications of this laboratory include investigating the causal role of specific brain regions and networks in cognitive processes in both healthy individuals and those with diseases. Additionally, it facilitates the discovery of new biomarkers, treatment targets, and protocols for psychiatric and neurological disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative conditions.
