The Institute of Neurosciences

The Institute of Neurosciences (UBneuro) was created under the premise to gather all research at the University of Barcelona that focused on a common goal: understanding the nervous system as a whole to give response to society challenges. It is a frontrunner in international neuroscience research, being one of the few institutes in the world that investigates the brain at every level. This includes research groups in neurobiology, neuropharmacology, pathophysiology, neurology, psychiatry, clinical psychology, neuropsychobiology and cognitive neurosciences.

An Awarded Institution

The Institute has been awarded twice consecutevily with the María de Maeztu Excellence Unit accreditation, and gathers near to 450 researchers from the University of Barcelona, in the multicultural city of Barcelona. We encourage and welcome collaboration with international research groups and organisations.

Research Promotion

Accordingly to the main goals of the Institute of Neurosciences, the Research Promotion Office aims to ensure that our Institute stands as a national and international referent in its research field. This excellence is achieved not only by the quality of the research and the international recognition of the investigators, but specially by the promotion of an inclusive and efficient research, aligned with social needs and based in an innovative scientific management.

The Institute of Neurosciences is one of the few institutes in the world to study the brain at all levels. We have been recognised throughout Spain, obtaining twice the María de Maeztu seal of Excelence.

Unique

UBneuro is a frontrunner in international neuroscience research, ranging from the biology of the neuron, through the formation of neural circuits, to the global function of the brain, which is the basis of cognition and behaviour.

Interdisciplinary

This is the first Institute of Neurosciences in the country which integrates research lines in neurobiology,
neuropharmacology, physiopathology, neurology, psychiatry, clinical psychology, neuropsychobiology and
cognitive neurosciences

From the bench to the bedside

UBneuro staff is involved in 3 University Hospitals
This grants the access to large cohort of clinical populations in all diseases related to the nervous system.

In 2017, the Institute was awarded with the María de Maeztu Excellence Unit accreditation, and renewed back to back in 2021.

We now gather near to 550 researchers from the University of Barcelona, in the multicultural city of Barcelona. Commitment to Neuroscience

Mission: what do we do

To study and to understand the function and pathology of the nervous system in order to address societal challenges, from the molecular to the cognitive level.

Vision: what do we want?

To be recognized as a global leader in neuroscience, fostering international collaborations and providing an inspiring work environment for members and collaborators.

Values: innovation

Pushing boundaries from molecules to mind to solve societal challenges. Excellence Striving for global neuroscience leadership through pioneering research. Inspiration Fosteri.

The Frontier of Neuroscience

UBneuro is a university research institute with more than 550 interdisciplinary researchers from 4 Faculties who work in collaboration with 3 University Hospitals (Hospital Clínic, Sant Joan de Deu I Bellvitge)

The work at UBneuro takes on form in specific lines of study that cover all current areas of neuroscientific research, at the molecular level up to cognition and behaviour. The centre’s research activity is complemented by the training of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well as the transfer to society of the knowledge generated at the Institute, with a growing number of patent applications, the creation of

As a research institute that belongs to a matrix organization, the UB, the UBneuro is managed according to the regulations of UB, including those specifically developed for research institutes, which were approved by the Standards of creation and functionality de les estructures internes de recerca i les alliances transversals de recerca (HUB) of the University of Barcelona (11th, october 2023).
