The Institute of Neurosciences of the UB strengthens collaboration with CINESTAV to support their new research centre on Aging

Monday, the 1st of October, 2018, marked positive steps taken between Mexico and Spain’s collaboration in the field of Neurosciences. Members from CINESTAV (Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN), one of Mexico’s largest and well-reputed research institutes, traveled to Barcelona to discuss collaboration opportunities for a new center on ageing that CINESTAV will host in Mexico City. Dr. Ricardo Félix Grijalva, Advisor to the Director of Cinvestav, Dr. José Segovia Vila; Researcher for the Department of Physiology, Biophysics, and Neurosciences, and Dr. Alexander De Luna Fors, Researcher for the Advanced Genetics Unit, met with the Rector for the University of Barcelona, Dr. Joan Elias Garcia, and the Vice Rector for the University of Barcelona, Dr. Domènec Espriu Climent, and Director of the Institute of Neurosciences, University of Barcelona, Dr. Jordi Alberch.

Rector Dr. Joan Elias welcomed the visitors in the historic building of the university in a meeting to discuss the opportunity of strengthening the ties between the University of Barcelona and CINESTAV and to address CINESTAV’s new center for ageing. CINESTAV seeks to encourage knowledge sharing from expertise within the Institute of Neurosciences at the University of Barcelona in order to build a stronger group of researchers in Mexico. This could bolster a broader, stronger group of young researchers for the generations of largely ageing population in Mexico. The three main research lines that CINESTAV’s Ageing Institute will pursue are: Cellular Biology, Translational Gerontology, and Ageing in Society.

Some of CINESTAV’s overarching goals in building the ageing institute are to address the early mortality rates and promote a healthy aging population in Mexico. They look forward to strengthening ties with the University of Barcelona in the area of Neuroscience, of which they consider to contain substantial expertise, in order to share knowledge and increase transnational cooperation.
