Genetic counseling in European universities | The case of neurodegenerative diseases

The GECONEU project aims to develop an online course for university students focused on genetic counselling. The main objective and central impact of this project is to help individuals and society to better understand the objectives of genetic testing and the usefulness of genetic counseling through an innovative learning and teaching environment for students. The development of the ‘Best Genetic Counseling Protocol” will be based on the PICOGEN program – a Genetic Counseling intervention for familial dementia as described by Neurologist Raquel Sánchez-Valle.

DATA SCIENCE | Introduction Course

The Introduction to Data Science and Machine Learning, taught by Petia Radeva among other researchers from the University of Barcelona.

This course provides students with a syllabus that covers the concepts and tools you will need throughout the entire cycle of a data science project: asking the right questions; data preprocessing and cleaning; hypothesis generation; modelling; data visualization; evaluation of solutions; and deploy data products.

Màster degrees

The Master degrees related to the Institute of Neurosciences are highly specialized. Students will have the opportunity to develop a guided research project and to learn innovative techniques.

In this link you can look up the main grants offered to course a Master degree in the University of Barcelona.

Master of Neurosciences

The master’s degree Neurosciences, provides interdisciplinary training in subjects ranging from molecular biology to cognitive studies and neuroimaging. It aims to equip future researchers in basic and clinical research with the knowledge needed to address problems by means of a cross-disciplinary approach and become skilled members of laboratories in public and private institutions. The program is also designed for professionals (physicians, psychologists, veterinary scientists, etc.) who want to update their knowledge about the most important areas of the neurosciences. Research is the primary focus of the master’s degree Neurosciences.

Master of Research in Behaviour and Cognition

The Master course of Research in Behaviour and Cognition, coordinated by Ferran Pons, is designed to train researchers to an internationally competitive level in behavioural sciences, specifically in the areas of personality and behaviour, cognition and plasticity, and in research methodology in behavioural sciences. The teaching plan consists of a number of subjects that provide an overall update in the contents of these areas, complemented with solid training in research methodology and other related topics, such as neuroscience. The master’s degree also grants access to doctoral studies, with continuity offered mainly through the UB doctoral program in Brain, Cognition and Behaviour.

Study of the master’s degree course requires a high level of English, since this is the main language of instruction used for the program, so that on completion graduates can easily operate in an international environment. The program is directed at professionals in the behavioural sciences who wish to complete their training in research work, and students interested in a research career.

Master in General Health Psychology

The Master’s degree in General Health Psychology is coordinated by Adela Fuste, part of the research team at Virtual Reality. This MSc designed to prepare candidates for careers in health psychology, giving them the knowledge and skills for competent professional practice in the regulated professional role of General Health Psychologist.

The course takes a scientific and professional approach that confers the skills required to analyse and formulate hypotheses on human behaviour and the capacity for behavioural intervention in order to promote and improve health. Students interested in continuing their studies at doctoral level can consult general information about the doctoral programme in Clinical and Health Psychology below.

Master in Artificial Intelligence

The master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence offers you an integrative and cutting-edge approach to the field and its application to real scenarios.

This master was created as a synergy between the Barcelona School of Informatics of the UPC, the School of Engineering of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Barcelona (UB) as an interuniversity master.

Introduction to Mental Health Research

The Master’s degree in Introduction to Mental Health Research is an interuniversity master’s degree, delivered through blended learning, which is organized by fundamental and clinical university research groups in the area of biomedicine applied to mental health, such as the Bipolar Disorder group, that belong to the national research network CIBERSAM (Centre for Networked Biomedical Research in the Area of Mental Health).

The degree is intended for Spanish and international students interested in research in psychiatry and mental health. The objectives of the course are to promote the training of mental health researchers in both fundamental and clinical aspects of the discipline, and to encourage interaction between groups working on mental health issues to facilitate the coordination of joint projects.

PhD Programmes

PhD students are the most valuable asset of the Institute of Neurosciences. In our institution, we promote a high quality international scientific environment, and we encourage collaborations between research groups, international mobility and attendance to conferences and workshops. In addition, we foster the creation of a PhD students group of the Institute of Neurosciences, to facilitate experience-sharing and participative activities.

In this link you can look up the main grants offered to finance a Doctoral Program in the University of Barcelona.

PhD in Biomedicine

The PhD in Biomedicine, coordinated by Esther Pérez Navarro, provides the university accreditation that certifies that this professional can carry out quality biomedical research independently.

The PhD degree in Biomedicine is also a plus for those professionals interested in developing their work in the business world; both in R&D departments and in management. Industries such as Pharmaceutical, Biotechnological or Biomedical Engineering companies welcome Doctors in Biomedicine to their staff in order to achieve their business objectives.

PhD in Brain, Cognition and Behaviour

The PhD in Brain, Cognition and Behaviour is coordinated by Joan Lopez Moliner. This PhD is an opportunity to learn in different research techniques including functional neuroimaging, psychophysics, computational modelling, virtual reality, eye movements and behavioural and neuropsychological tests that allow the doctoral student to broaden his/her possibilities to pursue post-doctoral research at the highest international level.

PhD in Clinical Health Psychology

The PhD in Clinical Health Psychology is coordinated by José Gutierrez Maldonado.

This programme is focused on the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable the autonomous carrying out of research projects, as well as working in interdisciplinary teams made up of experts in the different areas that make up this field of research.

PhD in Medicine and Translational Research

The PhD in Medicine and Translational Research, is the educational response of the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona related to advanced formation of the PhD students in clinical and biomedical investigation. This program includes the elaboration and presentation of the Doctoral Thesis consisting in a scientific study with the results of original research.

Training for Advanced Stem Cell Technologies in Neurology

The primary aim of ASCTN-Training is to provide the appropriate training for the participating Early Stage Researchers (ESRs), so that each individual ESR will complete a PhD degree based on their research work, while at the same time equipping them with the necessary tools to collaborate and develop innovative technologies for the modeling of neuronal disorders and the development of novel therapies.

Josep M Canals is the Coordinator of the ASCTN-Training consoritum.

Trainees for pre-graduate students

Most of the research groups from the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona offer to students in the lasts years of their degree (Psychology, Biology, Biomedicine and Medicine) the possibility to do a short trainee, as well as a practicum in the context of their final degree dissertation. In addition, some groups are open to host international students of the Erasmus programme or other foreign exchange programs.
